Tomodachi Life 3DS

tomodatchi life

Tomodachi life loosely translates Friend life. The aim being you use Mii creations as your characters for yourself, friends or family and just about anyone else you may want to create.

Since advertised it has been one of the most pointless and uninteresting games I have ever seen.

Showing Reggie Fils-aime, Satoru Iwata and other Nintendo developers as Mii’s at E3. You see them getting into rap battles, falling in love and creating love triangles, broadcasting the news, singing on stage with a dancing troupe, fighting it out by throwing objects at each other, trying on different outfits etc.

I thought to myself why would I even want to do any of that, and it made me wonder how this would appeal to a larger audience than children.

But Strangely the more it was advertised and the more that it was shown, it started to have a little appeal.

Nintendo started to introduce celebrities playing it making it cause a global wave of interest aimed especially at young children and teenagers. Smart move. Even adults I know on social media started to get the game and share screenshots.

So we received the game and I was a bit hesitant. Not only was there not enough room to install it on either 3DS or 2DS but I also did not want to really play it. Regardless I ordered a larger SD card and installed it and passed it to my five year old daughter to play.

I sat and helped her create the Mii’s she wanted and helped her find her way around the game and the small island you live on.

We went on to spend about 5-6 hours on it. I continued to play it after she had gone to bed to try to unlock shops and areas on the island for her for when she plays it next.

For a game that is so pointless and is not anything special or a huge announcement from Nintendo for me, it is so much fun! It is addictive and intriguing just like the brilliant Animal Crossing new leaf. It was so easy to lose 20 minutes to 2 hours at a time without realising where the time went.

Nintendo certainly know how to make the right type of game at the right time.

There is something magical about playing games featuring Mii characters, this was proven in Animal Crossing and Mario Kart Wii, then being able to interact with other Mii’s is the next evolutionary step.

Interacting and being social with your Mii’s is certainly the key with this game.

As you make friends with Mii’s of your real friends, family and partners you want the Mii’s to get together with the people they are with in real life. I found myself playing it expecting mine and my wife’s Mii character to make friends and fall in love. Turns out we are not compatible in the game and she has decided to go after her real life’s best friends husband’s Mii character. Like a jealous man I have been trying to sabotage their relationship and new love of each other in the hope that my wife’s Mii character will take interest in my Mii character. So far, no luck HaHa.

My Mii character though is good friends with my daughters character so it’s lovely to see them having a lovely close friendship and doing thing’s together. As anything goes in this game though my daughters character thinks my character needs someone special and keeps suggesting the Mii character of my sister-in-law. It feels so wrong and keep selecting the that’s wrong response, but it is such a riot of fun and craziness of this unique title and what can happen. You will make friendships and relationships with the most unlikely choice of characters, though you can try to sway the decisions of the characters.

All the Mii characters live in apartments of the same building, there are 24 windows at least to start with, each one representing an apartment. You will see different icons on the window’s for when characters want to make friends with other characters. They let you know when they are hungry or want a new item of clothing, when they want you to join them to play a game which are mini games, when they are feeling ill and want some medication and so on. Sometimes the lights will be out and when you tap their window it will say that they have gone to another mii’s apartment. When you go to the other characters apartment you can see them playing a video game console, sitting around chatting, dancing together and much more.

On the island map there are 22 icons to unlock. They range from shops and landmarks. An unlocked icon starts out grey, by tapping on it it will tell you how to unlock it, from having so many male to female islanders ratio to characters declaring their love and getting married.

The game may start to feel a little repetitive, but to keep thing’s interesting and keep you on your toes, create as many Mii characters as you can and move them into an apartment.

Some of the unlocked landmarks also have an event schedule, letting you know what is going to happen in that area throughout the day, from market stalls to, ‘guys’ and ‘girls’ meetings (make sure you stick around to listen to the conversations, they are hilarious), rap battles and quirky questions.

Keeping your islanders clothed, fed giving them items they ask for will keep them happy. Often this will require currency. Oddly it seems the more you spend on your islanders the more you earn.

There is also an icon you unlock where you can share photo’s you have taken during the game. Tapping this icon opens the 3DS’ browser and will let you log in to either Twitter or Facebook.

Photo’s can be taken at any event or when visiting apartment by pressing X to take a photo of the 2/3DS top screen and Y for the bottom screen.

Using the send receive functionality at the town hall you can send and receive items with friends who also own the game and have items that you do not have. You can also send your Mii characters to a friends island as an explorer for a visit.

My 5 year old daughter loves this game and in her own words she said it is her very favourite. And as for myself I haven’t been able to put it down.

My over all view is that this is a surprisingly entertaining gem suitable for all ages, that once again teaches me the lesson don’t knock it until you try it. Will I ever learn?

Pokemon art academy 3DS

PokemonAC3ds

The load-up title screen of Pokemon art academy is gorgeous. However, you may be surprised to see your 3D icon turn off. This title does not use the 3D utility what-so-ever. A shame but, never mind, there would’nt be much use for it anyway. At the home

At the home screen you have two available options and one locked option. You have lessons and free paint available straight away. There are also small tabs for some extras, album, which hold’s your saved sketches and also a slideshow option. Then there is also a share option, which can be shared via miiverse or local play. On selecting lessons, you go to starter exercises. You have 3 pokemon to choose from. You go into a paint style screen. You are shown step by step tutorials on how to draw your chosen

You are shown step by step tutorials on how to draw your chosen pokemon. The layout is very basic and to start with you have limited tools, as at this point you won’t need all of them. Dash patterned shapes will be your guidelines as you follow the line and shade the area. The touchpad is very responsive when using your stylus (or improvised stylus had you lost everyone you own). If you are not happy with your effort you can press your left shoulder button to undo it. If you attempt to follow the patten in one stroke and you go out of the line, when you press L the whole stroke will be deleted. If you do smaller strokes and make a mistake pressing L will delete smaller strokes. If you accidently undo anything by hitting L, press R to redo it. Once you are happy with what you have done you can move onto the next step. If you are really struggling with, or you’re not happy with your outlines, it may be a slight matter of

If you are really struggling with, or you’re not happy with your outlines, it may be a slight matter of calabiration, which can be found in your 3DS /2DS menu settings under other settings. Using the analogue stick you can move your picture around to make areas easier to draw from areas on the screen. Using your D-pad you can zoom in and out of your picture for more intricate detail such as, mouths, eyes and definition. You are guided throughout the whole drawing process and more options from the palette become available. You have just drawn your first pokemon. At the menu another option will unlock, quick sketch. More options on your pallet will be unlocked and also lesson modes.

Moving onto novice course there are four new pokemon to draw. Surprisingly, when you chose from one of the four, another four pokemon to draw will beome available once you have completed the lesson in the main pokemon you have chosen. To start with you are drawing pokemon faces. When you move onto the second available pokemon on novice, the faces will become angled to try drawing from a different perspective. Of course the more you advance, the whole the picture you will be drawing. Already on novice on the third pokemon icon you are drawing full bodies. Detail getting more intricate. More colours and pens becoming available from the More colours and pens becoming available from the palette. With eight pages on the lessons mode, expect to see more complicated yet spectacular effects you can learn to really bring your art to life. Remember, practise makes perfect. Like a high art photoshop programe, Nintendo have cleverly added layers to the picture. Meaning parts of the picture are broken down on seperate pages. So one would be your outlining, one would be your colour and so on. This enables you to shade a whole area without worrying about going over colours or outlines. It is also how animation is made. You are you one step closer to becoming a pokemon artist, but also an animator. (Bet you never thought you would aquire these awesome skills). Choosing the fourth

Choosing the fourth pokemon icon in novice lessons, will go into more detail about layers and introduce more tools. But don’t panic. As always in lessons there are guided outlines and on screen instructions to follow. The beauty of this is that it is very simple to pick up and follow, you will create stacks of pokemon pictures in no time at all. This game is a testament to show that anyone can draw as long as you learn the right basic’s, as even the most iconic of characters are drawn using shapes as their base. (insert image of Sonic, Mario, bart). In no time at all you will probably find yourself entering free paint, using all your new skills to draw a pokemon completely free hand, with no guidelines, just a picture of a pokemon to copy from. 12 Pokemon types to choose from, all at various detail and scale. It is worth regularly checking for downloadable images for newer designs. Downloadable content is frequent throughout Pokemon games, and can even be found on the Nintendo DS. How frequent they appear at present is unknown though. Once you have selected your chosen picture in this mode, by pressing X you can switch between whole design, guideline and freehand to copy from. Be sure to open your palette by pressing the pencil outline on the bottom right hand corner of you touchscreen. Pressing A will cycle through various guideline for more detail on outlines, these are also the layers I was talking about earlier. Y simply cycles backwards through the layers. As most Nintendo games and systems, and realising they also cater to a younger audience, there will be prompts to take breaks when it recognizes you have been playing for some time. Not a bad idea, and also makes your next lesson more enjoyable. Take your time and enjoy it for what it is. In quick sketch mode, it is a bit like speed drawing, but at your own pace. With 14 Pokemon types to choose from. Using B in this mode, you can switch you view between stencil, grid, guideline and freehand. It’s handy to use all these options as you can be more precise where you like. Pressing Y will take away layers from the design you are copying, pressing A will re-add the layers, but don’t hit A too much until you have finished your design as this will end your session. School Essentials All Year Round

With the new school year back in full swing, we are quickly becoming accustomed to the early morning and the never ending shopping lists we seem to accumulate. From the summer sun to the winter walks, I have got your back. I have put together a list of essentials eP20very parent needs, it has been a long slog, but I seem to have all the bases covered.

First we have a real must have for any handbag. P20, they have a fabulous range of sun protection items which not only last all day, but they really do work too. After this very long winded summer, it will soon be winging its way back around, to getting this essential now, just makes far more sense.

olaf

Next may have to be my favourite. I love a good notebook and I would be lying if I didn’t admit to wanting to have one of these for myself. Frozen has been a huge hit this year so any of their merchandise is always a huge hit. More so when it comes to items for school. Which child doesn’t want to have the cool olaf notebook. I know mine do.

But not only have Sambro made Frozen stationary, but they have also made One direction andTeenage Mutant Ninja Turles, all available from Littlewoods, argos and peacocks to name a few. There really is something for everyone. I don’t know about you, but I have total stationary envy.

panda

Then we have a walk to school or lunchbox must have. The new look, yet still fantastic, panda soft drinks. Available from almost all of the supermarkets Panda are a classic and they still taste great. These little bottles fit into almost any lunchbox and are great to pop into any handbag for the walk to or from school, especially when they insist on racing you!

tape

Scotch tape is one of those things you always need. From taping together a school project or fixing a rather vicious notebook, scotch tape can do it all. 3M have created this rather magic tape, that has all of the following capabilities; instantly repositionable – great for art classes when they make a mistake, you can write on the tape, doesn’t go yellow over time – precious kids scrapbooks stay perfect forever, easily photocopied and does no ghost and easy for children to use as it doesn’t get stuck to itself! All of which will come in handy at any moment. Perfect for the craft draw.

poundland

Ahh poundland, a savour for any parent. they have everything from PE kit bags, pencils and pens to the pictured hippo staples (amazing) coloured tape and multipacks of rubbers. Essential for any rubber chewing child (hey, it happens. I don’t condone, but my brother ate his way through more than one rubber in his time) Poundland stock everything you need to fill a pencil case or craft box and all for £1 each. You canmum diary‘t complain or go wrong with their school essentials.

Next we have one for us Mums. Yay! A mum diary has everything you need to successfully plan your families life. School days bring trips, clubs and the dreaded parents evening. And that’s only a fraction of it, so being prepared and one step ahead is essential. That is where the Mum diary comes in. With a fabulous grid view, week planning and fitting perfectly into any handbag, it will become your new best friend. lexicon barbie

Next is a firm favourite of Ninny’s. The Lexicon Barbie tablet from QVC. This tablet retails at £86 and has so much to offer. With kids becoming so savvy, having some electronic learning time has become a norm. This tablet runs off android, so you have access to their thousands of apps right off the bat, but because this is  Lexibook tablet it also offers you the chance to use their 26,000 free and paid for apps. SO that on top of the android apps leaves you with so many possibilities it’s unreal.

Ninny has gotten on so well with this tablet. It’s child-friendly interface and cute look has kept her entertained for hours. Not only can she watch the pre-loaded Barbie videos but she also has access to so many different learning apps, she has come on leaps and bounds at school.

rays

Yes, this is another must for mums, a fabulous range from Clintons, The Rays of sunshine mugs AND travel mugs are just gorgeous. These travel mugs are firstly amazing at keeping the drinks the warm, but they are ceramic! So you feel like you have a proper cupper at hand!

The travel mugs retail for £8.50 and they have been perfect since the cold weather has started drawing in. I know I can be running late and still have time to pop the lid on my travel mug and rush out the door.

I have had a few jealous glares I will admit. But no-one is pencilcalhaving my Rays of sunshine mug.

Hallmark, they have some fabulous notebooks, pencil cases (pictures) and those all-important birthday cards and invites. Let’s face it, as the weeks roll by, the friend count increases and the birthday invites come flooding in. Hallmark do some really beautiful notebooks and stationary, all of which I would happily take of Ninnys hands should she need me too. Eco-Hydra hand san packs 50ml

Next is my own addition and essential school bag item. Hand sanitizer. Let’s face it, they are not at the age where they can be trusted to wash their hands. No matter how much you try and encourage them. So this ecohydra hand sanitiser is really easy for little hands and they always enjoy using it. I think its the whole doing something in a different way thing. I can be assured she has clean hands after using the toilet and before eating, because she loves doing ‘mums job’ Anovia Head On 3 in 1 image shampoo and spray

I wish she did the rest of the thing I ask her to do!

Next is nits. Its always nits! These fabulous products from Anovia not only help stop nits in their tracks, but they are also great at prevention. Which means it is gentle enough to be used in the daily hair care routine. We all dread the nit letter, but it almost always happens, so Head On from Anovia’s 3-in-1 range contains a unique blend of essential oils that work in harmony to stop these creatures in their tracks.  All of the products are manufactured in the UK using 97% naturally derived ingredients.  Head On contains tea tree, eucalyptus and neem oil, which derives from the evergreen neem tree in India and acts as a natural insecticide. So they won’t do any damage to little heads.

Last but not least is winterwear from Regatta. Regatta are a classic and they never stop thinking of new ways to keep warm whilst outside moonflareenjoying the great outdoors.
